Women in Hospitality, founded by industry veteran Ann Kalembe in 2019 is a non-profit initiative helping women in Uganda’s hospitality sector overcome different challenges through availing different career development opportunities and empowering them to challenge entrenched gender biases.
“Many young women are forced to offer sexual favors to advance their careers,” ~ Ms. Kalembe “We help marginalized women overcome these obstacles and unlock their full potential.”
The initiative conducts research and provides training, mentorship, advocacy, and financial empowerment programs to its members, addressing critical issues such as limited career advancement opportunities, lack of support and equal opportunities, balancing work and family responsibilities, Cultural norms and stereotypes.
“Women in hospitality face unique challenges,” Ms. Kalembe explained. “Long hours, crisis management, and problem-solving can be exhausting, especially when coupled with traditional gender roles and cultural expectations.”
We welcome women from all facets of the industry, from entry-level to senior positions, including back and front house staff, food and beverage professionals, tour Operators and travel agents.
We also engage men as allies through the “Friends of Women in Hospitality” program, fostering a collaborative approach to promoting gender equality.
“As Uganda’s hospitality sector continues to grow, it’s essential we prioritize inclusivity and equity,” Ms. Kalembe emphasizes. Our mission is to empower, inspire, and elevate more women in the hospitality industry with a vision of seeing moreof them take up big positions in management roles and other key positions in the hospitality sector.
